If you saw the season finale of NBC's The Office, then you probably remember James Spader. Sure, there were lots of famous faces in the mix for Michael Scott's (Steve Carell) job, from Ray Romano to Will Arnett to Jim Carrey. But the Boston Legal star was perhaps the most memorable. He played Robert California, the excruciatingly smug candidate who actually frightened Jim during his interview. Check out this clip if you'd like to see it again.
And guess who else would like to see Spader again? The show's producers. "In the finale, he kicked ass," a source close to the show told Entertainment Weekly. “He was so funny and had this weird energy. We didn’t want to pass it up.”
Weird energy goes a long way on this show. Spader is reportedly in talks to become not just the branch manager, but the CEO of Dunder Mifflin. (The branch manager job left open by Steve Carell is still up for grabs, apparently.) Kathy Bates (who plays current CEO Jo Bennett) will be leaving to focus on Season 2 of her show, Harry's Law. That means a guy even creepier than Creed (Creed Bratton) may be calling the shots next season.
Of course, Robert California will have to accept the job. But he did take the time to interview for Michael's job. As he put it: "Do I look like someone who would waste my own time?"
